We’re excited to announce that BorderSmart is officially available today on iOS and Android — completely free. If you cross the US–Mexico border at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa with any regularity, you know the feeling: you leave the house with plenty of time, and somewhere between the freeway on-ramp and the inspection booth, an hour of your day simply disappears. BorderSmart exists to change that. Starting today, you can see live wait times and multi-hour forecasts before you even get in the car.
The problem isn’t just inconvenience — it’s the cumulative cost of uncertainty. San Ysidro is the busiest land port of entry in the Western Hemisphere, processing more than 70,000 northbound vehicles on peak days. Otay Mesa handles tens of thousands more, with a significant share of commercial and trusted-traveler traffic. Neither crossing operates on a predictable schedule. A crossing that flows in 15 minutes on a Tuesday morning can balloon to 90 minutes by Friday afternoon, or spike unexpectedly after an inspection incident that backs up cars for miles. Travelers who don’t have access to good information waste enormous amounts of time — not just occasionally, but week after week, year after year.
BorderSmart solves this by doing two things that no free app has done well together: showing you what’s happening at the border right now, and telling you what’s likely to happen next. Live wait times are pulled directly from U.S. Customs and Border Protection official data, the same numbers displayed on highway signage. The forecast layer goes further, using years of historical crossing data to model how waits at each lane type typically evolve across the day, the week, and the season. When you open BorderSmart two hours before you plan to leave, you’re not just seeing a snapshot — you’re seeing a projection you can actually plan around.
The features we’ve built reflect how real border crossers think and work. Lane-level detail matters: standard vehicle lanes, Ready Lanes (for travelers with RFID-enabled documents like Enhanced Driver’s Licenses and US Passport Cards), and SENTRI lanes for trusted travelers each behave differently, and BorderSmart tracks them separately. Push alerts mean you can set a maximum wait you’re willing to sit through, put your phone down, and trust that we’ll ping you the moment conditions drop below your threshold. The app is fully bilingual in English and Spanish — every screen, every label, every notification — because the San Diego–Tijuana corridor is a bilingual community and your tools should reflect that. And because cell signal near the border can be unreliable, BorderSmart caches the latest data locally so you’re never completely in the dark.
BorderSmart is free to download on the App Store and Google Play. No account required, no subscription gate on the core features. Open it, pick your crossing, and start planning smarter crossings today. If you have questions, feedback, or run into anything unexpected, our support team is here for you. We built this app because we cross the border too — and we can’t wait to hear how it’s helping you.
